A Couple of Notes is a book reviews podcast that focuses on books the hosts feel have unique concepts or premises and analyze how successful the authors are in executing their story. The hosts are Kaitlin and Rome, a married couple and writing duo. Rome and Kaitlin have been best friends since elementary school, and they've been creating together for just as long. They produced their first work together in 2014, when their original script, Pickett Fence, was produced at Arizona State University. The pair currently write for the blog Creative Bay LLC, and are in the process of publishing their first novel, in addition to creating their podcast.
What made you start your blog?
We had different reasons for getting in the podcast game. For Kaitlin, this podcast was a way to commit to reading more books. While she loves to read, she found she wasn't reading new books at the rate she had when she was younger, and thought a project would hold her accountable and be fun at the same time. For Rome, it began with friends and colleagues saying, "You and Kaitlin are funny. You have a soothing voice. You should make a podcast." You can only hear someone say, "You should start a podcast" so many times before you start to think, "Yeah, I should!"
Which part of having the blog do you love most?
It's fun! We've learned a lot, read a few books we probably wouldn't have otherwise, and we get to learn about each other as well as we read and review these books together.
Where did the name for your blog come from?
We spent a lot of time thinking about the name of the podcast. We wanted something that made it clear this was a review podcast while also sharing who we are. Since we're married, a 'couple' so to speak, when one of us threw out A Couple of Notes it fit perfectly.
What do you love most about books?
We both love the way books allow us to expand our worldview without leaving the comfort of our home. We're both introverts and books allow us to "see" places and "meet" people that we never would in our normal lives, and we both learn to look at the world differently through the eyes of the characters in a book.
What genres do you blog about?
A Couple of Notes is focused on fiction novels, but beyond that it isn't limited to one genre. While most of our reviews so far have been character-driven narratives, our to-read list contains high fantasy, sci-fi, romance, and more.
What are your favourite books?
Kaitlin's favorite book of all time is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Rome's favorite is The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton.
What are your 3 top reads from the last year?
We both agree that Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones was our number one for the podcast this year. Kaitlin's other two are The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee and Michael Dante DiMartino, and Where the Crawdads Sing by Deliah Owens. For Rome the other top two are The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee and The Tower of Nero by Rick Riordan (the last book in his Trials of Apollo series).
