Tree of Life by MC Harrison

Synopsis:
Following the deaths of both her parents, Brooke Davies sells the family home in Virginia. Her fiancé, Steve, has suggested that after their wedding they move within commuting distance of his job in New York City. Brooke cannot wait until after the wedding to move because the new owners are already taking possession of her family home. She has chosen to look at houses in Greenport, Connecticut, a location familiar to her from childhood days spent with her grandparents. Her grandmother Gloria lives on the outskirts of Greenport and the realtor, Jeannie Edge, is an acquaintance of hers.
While touring real estate listings with Jeannie, Brooke receives an unexpected text message from Steve. He has decided to end their engagement and received a refund from the catering director.
When Brooke's realtor suggests postponing the house hunt, Brooke decides to continue because she has quit her job in Virginia and accepted a teaching position at a small college nearby.
Brooke makes a rash decision and without consideration makes an offer on Thornwood Trace. Unfortunately, she has chosen to purchase a forlorn estate which consists of acreage, a white clapboard cottage, and a historic stone house in need of repair.
The historic stone house from the late 1700's has been selected by the local historical society to become a museum in honor of the original owner, Doctor Thornwood. During her attempts to discourage the historical society's plans, Brooke discovers that the doctor was an abortionist with a criminal record (based upon a true account with research documented in the Afterward). Not only did he practice at his home but he literally buried all evidence. Numerous peculiar events are attributed to the paranormal and spark the suggestion of reja vu. Brooke and her love interest Ross Thornwood become desparate in their attempt to prevent the evils from the past revisiting the estate.
Brooke's life at Thornwood Trace has become an adventure that includes: a handsome restauranteur, a stray cat, a Thornwood descendant, an egotistical best friend, a locksmith, a family genealogist, a flashy model, a curator, a pompous minister, an elderly owner of a Long Island estate, a caregiving grandmother and a compassionate black minister. Unexpectedly, there is a warm and fuzzy, happy ending.
