The Art Of Being An Author - Denis McCarthy
Talk us through your stages in the writing process
I use blocks of times for actual writing time. This could be two hours, four hours a whole day. For me this works as it doesn't seem a chore and I can write as I feel, which allows me to write more. I don't then get demotivated.
At times I'm not writing I do think about my book and make some notes, so no time is wasted.
Do you have a set writing space?
I have various work spaces, the sofa my work office, the train, hotels when I stay away. I always have Bruce Springsteen on in the background as that's my inspiration. I cannot write in silence so Bruce centres me.
Which part of the writing process do you enjoy the most?
Just developing the story is great. I let the story develop as I type. I have an overall idea for the story, but I like the story to almost be alive and not to strict.
Which part of the writing process do you least enjoy?
Finishing it for sure. I hate when I'm finished as I want to start again.
What one piece of advice would you give to other authors when it comes to the writing process?
Do not stress. It's your time and your deadline. Let the ideas just come to you. If you feel you are struggling stop it. Go and do something you enjoy. Take it easy. There's no rush.
