Book review - The Secret Keepers by Chrissy Lessey

Review:

Set in 1718 this is the story of 3 young witches (Catherine, Hannah, and Charlotte) who have lived in peace on a small island with their community under Queen Lucia, however when they find Blackbeard and his men attacking their community difficult decisions must be taken and so Queen Lucia gives over Catherine, Hannah and Charlotte (her own daughter) to protect the rest of her people but what will become of the 3 young witches once Blackbeard and his men have them?

This is an interesting take on a story about witches in that it is based around witches who have always aimed to keep to themselves and simply live their lives and abide by set rules when it comes to magic and spells. The story worked well and Blackbeard was an interesting addition to this that at first worried me as it could become gimmicky but thankfully this was not the case. This is a well told story that has a good flow to it and even with this being a short prequel it is something that allows you to get a number of events and a feel for the style of writing which I enjoyed.

This is a good introduction to Chrissy Lessey and her work. It is my first experience of her work and I will move on to read The Coven soon based on this as it was well written, flowed well and was an enjoyable read.
