Fiona Graham interview
AUTHOR INTERVIEW
A little introduction:
I am a screenwriter and author. I wrote and produced the award-winning Irish feature film Songs for Amy’ which was released cinematically in 2014 and is available on multiple global platforms, including Amazon. ’The Chancer’ is my first novel, and I hope first of many. I continue to write screenplays also.
When did your love of books begin?
I have loved books since childhood. Born at the tail end of Gen X, Enid Blyton was a firm favourite
followed by CS Lewis.
When did you start to have the wish to become an author?
My father set up a business from home in the late 80s and bought a computer (really showing my age here). At the age of 12 I spent hours tapping away at what I told everyone was my first novel. I think I got to chapter four before writing myself into a wall! My career led me in a different direction but I was always writing.
How have you found the process for becoming an author?
I have been writing screenplays for many years and although many of the skills can be transferred,
a book provides more freedom of expression on the page and the ability to delve further into the minds and inner workings of the characters. I read as much as possible, across several different genres, which always improves my writing. Learning from others is so important.
What would you say to those wanting to become an author?
Start writing your book and read everything!
Tell us about your book/books:
’The Chancer’ is my first novel and will be published in late April. It is a humorous underdog story set in the contrasting locations of the west of Ireland and LA, in 1989.
What do you love about the writing/reading community?
The support is fantastic and provides so many helpful resources. I’ve also been very fortunate to have a friend, Emma Heatherington, a very talented and successful author who has given me a lot of great advice and support.
If you could say anything to your readers what would it be?
No matter what is going on in your world just now, I hope stepping into mine entertains you and makes you laugh.
