Feed My Reads recommended in 2022 - day 84

Far From Mars: Nine Creative Nonfiction Stories Featuring People and Places in Champaign-Urbana by Sal Nudo is our Feed My Reads recommended read in 2022 for day 84, this book is a really different read from things I've read before and is very much one that is recommended as being something different in a good way and well worth checking out.

“Far From Mars” contains nine creative nonfiction articles about individuals who live and work in Champaign-Urbana, two adjoining towns in east central Illinois. The pieces range from dog walkers who adore their Greyhounds to a cassette collector who hosts a local radio show and plays on-air music via the tapes he buys. Readers will also meet an established chef who is now part owner of a new restaurant, a recovered alcoholic turned antique collector, and a musician who performs solo despite a lingering cold that will alter his performance. The book concludes with an award-winning immersion journalism story, “The Man Who Lives to Help,” which covers the life of a formerly incarcerated individual who is trying to improve his ways in Rantoul. The Midwesterners in the charming “Far From Mars” are regular people who took chances, followed their passions, and pursued meaningful hobbies.

Review:

Sal Nudo is an author who I have never had the pleasure to read anything by and so when deciding which of his work to go for I opted to check out his non-fiction work first of all and I was really glad that I did as this book showed someone who has worked to develop their journalistic skills and utilise these skills in this book which is a selection of insights into the interesting people who Sal has met and had the pleasure to get to know a little.  These are normal, everyday people who have interesting tales to tell and thanks to the way Sal is able to tell their stories the reader is not left bored with this non-fiction offering but instead will find themselves enjoying each of these short stories and being impressed by a writer who clearly has a real talent.

This non-fiction offering is a really well written piece and great introduction to an author who is well worth checking out.  I'd say this is a great way to try a non-fiction work that is short, an easy read and gives you a chance to see just how special those everyday people we meet can actually be.
