My Brand New Book Release with Kyrie Wang

What's is your new book called?

Fobidden Ties (Enemy’s Keeper Series book 1)

Where did the inspiration for the name come from?

An “enemy” is not someone to protect or keep. And what does “enemy” mean, anyway? To get the reader thinking, I wanted an inherent contradiction in naming my series “Enemy’s Keeper”.

Book one of the series is called “Forbidden Ties” because most relationships in the book- whether it be crossing racial boundaries, ethnic groups or social classes, were frowned upon in historical England. And yet, when circumstances force these characters to collide and cooperate, their relationship evolves in unexpected and poignant ways.

When is the book released?

March 17, 2022

Is this book part of a series and if it is then can you give us a little background to the series?

Yes, it is only book 1 of the Enemy’s Keeper series!

Instead of focusing on well-known historical figures, I wrote from perspectives that had little voice in history- the orphans, displaced, and homeless. The main character- a poor, orphaned young woman- has only her good heart, perseverance, and wit to survive. There is no magic. All consequences of disease, weather, and war unfold as they would in 11th century England. This raises the stakes for my characters and makes the story relatable and gripping.

Being a physician, I wrote in relevant medical details over the 4 books. There are also three slow-burn love stories over the four books that are based on genuine understanding, not lust, and I believe are positive models for a teenaged audience. I dedicated the first book to my daughter. Each love story begins differently and has its unique challenges.

The theme of reconciliation and knowing one’s enemy before judging them is dear to my heart. Our world has become increasingly divided. Arguments have fractured families and I hope to show how we all still love, dream, and laugh despite tragedies and conflict. There is always a thread of hope running through my novels.

Tell us about the book:

1075 A.D. England

Nine years after the Norman Conquest

Orphaned during a rebellion against William the Conqueror, Heather is thrust into another revolt when her childhood sweetheart disappears to save the son of a murdered Norman knight.

This quarrelsome son, Matthew, is determined to destroy the English rebels who decimated his household.  Heather stays out of it- until she is accidentally entangled with a young rebel leader named Toby.  Although an Anglo-Saxon like herself, Toby is driven by vengeance against the Normans that she does not share.

As she is whisked off through the forests of medieval England, inhabited by a dangerous but misunderstood tribal society, Heather comes to question her understanding of good and evil.  Her decisions increasingly alienate her supposed allies, and she uncovers the unsettling past of the young man she dreamed of marrying.

The final stand she takes in the revolt will put into peril everything she holds dear.

If you could do a sales pitch then what would you say to those considering buying this book?

The orphans. The outcast. In a country torn by rebellion, they will rise as heroes.

Featuring intertwining stories of suspense, adventure, and romance, my novel conveys the message that good and evil are not always clear-cut. Individual actions matter even if cultural norms and overarching institutions seem to have the final say.

As an added creative twist, I weave in the secret entry of gunpowder into England. I explained in my author's note how this was possible even in 11th century Europe, as contemporary China was already throwing firebombs and shooting flame arrows, and the Silk Road connected their world with Europe’s.

5/5 STARS: A swirling mix of political intrigue, vivid action sequences, and lighthearted romance makes Forbidden Ties a delight for medieval fiction lovers. Author Kyrie Wang's tale of two people from opposing factions finding themselves forced to work together under extraordinary circumstances is captivating from start to finish. - Pikasho Deka for Readers’ Favorite Reviews

5/5 STARS: The characters are well developed, the scenes are described with attention to detail, and the history is well researched. Interspersed between the battles and the growing need to find clarity between what is good and what is evil, romance blossoms with a subtlety that will have readers sitting on edge, wanting to learn more. - Emily-Jane Hills Orford, Award-winning author of Queen Mary's Daughter, for Reader`s Favorite Reviews

5/5 STARS: I immediately admire historical novels that dive into periods of history that can easily be overlooked, and the years of strife following the Norman conquests – the start of the history of England as we know it – is rife with tales waiting to be told. Kyrie Wang has done a lot of research into this period, and her understanding of it all is evidenced on the pages as the gorgeous prose whisks readers away and into the world of England in 1075... Overall, Forbidden Ties is an excellent story that will appeal to a broad audience, and I recommend it to one and all. - K.C. Finn for Reader's Favorite Reviews
