Genna Rowbotham interview
AUTHOR INTERVIEW
A little introduction:
My career began in the secretarial field until becoming a full-time Mum. Inspired by my children, in 2017, I took the plunge to write a children’s story, fitting it in around caring for a young family. Since then, I have published seven children’s books.
I live with my lively, imaginative family in Derbyshire in a house full of books, magazines as well as colourful drawings and all sorts of artwork from my children (empty cereal boxes are often taken from the recycle bin to reinvent something wonderful like a spy camera or a telescope).
My passions include reading, writing, travelling, astrology, swimming, theatre, spending time with my family and exploring the great outdoors.
When did your love of books begin?
During early childhood. I loved visiting the library and searching for my next book or books. It was great being able to entertain myself and escaping into my own world.
I was fascinated (and still am) about all things ghostly/spiritual, so would often read books on the subject. Other favourite books were: ‘Charlottes Webb’ by E.B. White, ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C. S. Lewis, ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll.
When did you start to have the wish to become an author?
As a teenager, I had thoughts of writing a story but never did anything about it. When I became a full-time Mum, thoughts of writing a children’s book would often pop into my head. Usually, when I was reading stories to my own children. At the time, I didn’t think it was something possible for me and hadn’t a clue how I would go about it. But whenever I mentioned writing a book my husband would say, ‘Just do it!’ So I did. In 2017, I began my writing journey and I’ve been writing ever since. I’ve learned so much since back then, but you never stop learning and there is so much to learn in the publishing world.
How have you found the process for becoming an author?
In the beginning, I had lots of self-doubt about myself as an author… whether my writing was good enough etc. Although, my husband has been very supportive in encouraging me when my confidence has been low. Writing can be very time-consuming but as a busy Mum, I love the flexibility of working my own hours.
I’ve always loved the world of books, so I count myself lucky to have a career that I love. Writing stories for children to enjoy is very rewarding – and I’m now addicted to the whole creative process.
What would you say to those wanting to become an author?
Read. Write. Read. Write. Be a part of the writing community; they are immensely supportive. Join writers’ groups for networking, support and encouragement. Enrol on any free online writing courses that may interest you – there are loads out there. Most importantly, believe in yourself and don’t ever give up. You can do it.
