Brenda Guiton interview

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

When did your love of books begin?

As a child. I was blown away by stories like Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island.

When did you start to have the wish to become an author?

A little late in life, unfortunately. I always knew I had at least one book inside me, but I was too wrapped up in other things - until I hit the big 5-O and started writing for the sheer pleasure of it.

How have you found the process for becoming an author?

Much more complex than I'd imagined. I was very green to begin with in all aspects of the publishing world, so it's been a big learning curve for me.

What would you say to those wanting to become an author?

As with any new venture, learn all that you can about your trade. Read about the techniques, different structures, common pitfalls etc before you put pen to paper. A good place to start would be Stephen King's "On Writing" although I've read many more books on the subject. Even though you develop your own style and learn a lot in the process, it makes sense to know the basics.

Tell us about your book/books:

My debut novel, 'Taking Chances' is a romantic suspense involving an affair. It has a lot of diverse characters (including a sinister playwright you wouldn't want to tangle with!) and moves between the Yorkshire Dales and the beautiful island of Cyprus.

'At the End of the Sentence' is a fast-paced suspense, described by reviewers as a rollercoaster of a ride with lots of plot twists. Of all my books, this one is my personal favourite.

'Suspicion' is a cold-case mystery/suspense, also set in the Dales. Featured in the story is one of nature's fascinating phenoma: The Strid at Bolton Abbey - part of the raging river Wharfe. Legend has it that no one who dared to enter the waters has ever made it out alive.

'Beneath the Poison Tree' is a psychological suspense set in and around my hometown in South Yorkshire. It delves into the mind of a woman obsessed and the lengths she will go to when her life starts to unravel.

'Jamie's Wake-up Call' is my latest book - a family drama that's centred around a risky restaurant venture and set in a tourist resort on the East coast of England.

I enjoy writing suspense and like to keep my readers guessing and then surprise them with a killer ending. So far, according to the reviews, I've managed to pull this off.

What do you love about the writing/reading community?

Lots of things. I've made some wonderful friends, not only in the UK but across the US, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. They are all extremely good writers whom I wouldn't otherwise have known. I find the writing community in general to be very supportive of each other, generous with their time and always willing to share their tips/advice. I love the interaction and great camaraderie.

If you could say anything to your readers what would it be?

A big thank you to those who have taken the time to review my books. It cannot be emphasised enough how important reviews are for an author. It's easy to get lost amidst the thousands of new titles appearing on Amazon each day, so reviews really do count. Aside from that, there is no greater reward than knowing someone has enjoyed your story. It makes all the effort that's gone into it so worthwhile.

Where can people connect with you?
