Beth Overmyer interview

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

When did your love of books begin?

I was a late bloomer with books. It took me until I was ten or eleven to really start enjoying them, and the series that did that for me was John R. Erickson's Hank the Cowdog books.

When did you start to have the wish to become an author?

Shortly after I started getting more into reading. I've always loved making up stories and playing pretend. For a while, though, I thought I was going to be a poet. It wasn't really until my twenties that I realized prose was my true path--even though I'd been working on many novels and short stories.

How have you found the process for becoming an author?

Like any job or passion, it takes a lot of work and dedication. It's trying and failing and falling and then picking yourself up and trying again.

What would you say to those wanting to become an author?

Read. Read in the genre you're writing in and read outside it as well. Even without realizing it, you will absorb lessons from what you consume and it will inform how you write your prose. Not to say you'll be copying authors. It's more that you'll be inspired and learn different ways of telling a story.

Tell us about your book/books:

Right now, I have the first two books in a trilogy out with Flame Tree Press. Book three should come out in the next year or so. Book one (The Goblets Immortal) is about a wanted man with magical abilities. Aidan's family went missing a long time ago, and he's trying to find a way to bring them back...even if that means working for his worst enemy. Book two (Holes in the Veil) continues the adventures of Aidan as he attempts to find the Questing Goblet, a magical vessel that gives its drinker luck beyond measure. (Mistborn and The Hobbit were strong influences in writing these books.)

What do you love about the writing/reading community?

I like the serious joy every writer expresses when others succeed in the writing community. There might be a few trolls that rear their heads, but for the most part, everyone seems genuinely excited for and supportive of each other.

If you could say anything to your readers what would it be?

Thank you so much for all your support and for joining me on this great adventure. Without you, I wouldn't have nearly as much fun!

Where can people connect with you?

I'm @Bethyo on Twitter and on Instagram, I'm @bethovermyer.
