Getting Those Sales: An Author Tale - Denis McCarthy

Having put your book out there do you set a sales goal?

Not really. Yes it's great to sell a million books, but writing my trilogy is something I've always wanted to do. If some people buy it that's great, but at this stage I'm looking more for feedback and if people have enjoyed reading it.

How much does the question of sales play in your mind when pricing your book?

I never think of the pricing when I'm pricing my book. I'm lucky I have a full time job so I'm not worried about sales. I just want to get as many people as possible to read my book. If I ever become a full time author, then I may worry about sales.

What do you do to drive sales?

I use twitter and try to make people aware of my book. It's very difficult being a self-published author. There are a lot of us out there and it's impossible to get everyone's attention. I think getting customer reviews also helps, as those who want to read my book can see what it's really about.

How much do book bloggers help with sales?

Bloggers are really important. Not only they do share books but they offer insights into other authors. This can generate ideas and also allow a facility where ideas can be shared. I think more authors, established and upcoming should use blogs more.

How much do reviews help with book sales?

Reviews that offer constructive feedback can really help the author. I have found that someone will leave a low rating with no feedback. This is extremely frustrating as other readers just see a rating and not the reasons. There's little value in doing this to the author and potential readers.

Customers leaving feedback can also add to the story by showing how complexed or easy it was to follow, or more importantly if it's worth reading.  I think there are a small minority who do not see the consequences of not leaving a review. Please leave a review!!!

How does it feel knowing someone has purchased your book?

Amazing. It's a great feeling knowing that someone has taken such an interest in your work they are prepared to buy it. When I got my first sale, I felt like Van Gogh selling a painting. It's great.
