M.J. Glenn interview

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

A little introduction:

My name is Maddy Glenn, although I write under the name M.J. Glenn. I live and work in Suffolk, running a self-publishing business called Softwood Self-Publishing. We help authors from all backgrounds through the writing and self-publishing process, offering bespoke services, including coaching, editing, design, and marketing.

When did your love of books begin?

Mum used to read to me when I was little. As soon as I could read myself, I fell in love with books. I must have been about six years old.

When did you start to have the wish to become an author?

When I was about seven years old, I decided that I would be an author one day. I wanted readers to love my books as much as I loved books like Harry Potter.

How have you found the process for becoming an author?

It took me almost twenty years to finally release my first book. I finished writing it during NaNoWriMo in November 2019 and self-published during a pandemic in 2020! Some parts were challenging and a learning-curve, while others were pure excitement. I loved working on the cover design!

What would you say to those wanting to become an author?

Think long and hard about how much control you want over the final product. This will hugely influence the steps you take after writing your manuscript. Do you want to try to get an agent? Do you want to self-publish? Do you want to get your book into bookshops? There are so many publishing options to consider, but it all comes down to staying in control of what you want.

Tell us about your book/books:

On the Edge is the first book of the Dwelling Hunter Series. The main character is Ebony Wick, an orphan and highwayman. She lives in the woods to stay clear of the Snatchers, who round up orphans and send them to orphanages, nicknamed The Clink. While seeking answers about her family and revenge against the Snatchers, she discovers a secret that changes her world.

You can now order On the Edge via Waterstones or buy a physical copy on Amazon.

I have also written two short stories, set before On the Edge. These are Hunter and Snatcher and will eventually be included in a collection of short stories. Hunter is available as a free download when you sign up to my mailing list. Snatcher is available via my online shop.

What do you love about the writing/reading community?

Everyone is so supportive! I love that self-publishing is completely accepted and is becoming better understood by the day. It is a growing change in the publishing world and is revolutionising the way we get our books out there.

If you could say anything to your readers what would it be?

Thank you for all your support – and thank you for your patience as I work on the next books!

Where can people connect with you?

I am on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You can also contact me via my business website.
