John Delaney interview

 AUTHOR INTERVIEW

A little introduction:

I started writing professionally part time in 1999.  After forty years in accountancy I retired in 2020 and it is great to concentrate on writing.
I am a multi genre writer who started off writing boxed and online murder mystery party games. I now have thirty plots for sale at www.playmurdermystery.com. I then moved on to writing a musical which had its world première in 2018. Since then I have written two more musicals and an opera which are under development. One of the opera arias, called This Mortal Man, featured on the composer, Oliver Davis’s, CD Solace and reached number one on the UK classical chart and eighteen on the US Billboard chart.
Other interests include travel and music, I play guitar and sing in a rock band called Open Doors.

When did your love of books begin?

My love of books started at a very young age and I have never been without books on my bedside cabinet.

When did you start to have the wish to become an author?

I rather fell into being an author. In 1998 I took part in a murder mystery dinner party with friends and enjoyed it so much I thought I would have a go at writing my own. Three months later Murder on Paradise Island was finished and after testing it out on enthusiastic friends I sent it off to the publishers to see if they were interested.  That was my lucky break as they were just looking for a new writer so they agreed to publish. Over the next five years they published ten of my plots which enjoyed great sales through Toys’R’Us, Hamleys and other retailers.

How have you found the process for becoming an author?

I was very lucky to get a publishing deal with my first creation and encouraged me to try other avenues. My first musical took a lot of effort to get staged but it was worth it to see it performed on stage with a cast of forty.
Getting an opera staged appears very difficult due to staging costs but it is great to have seen one of the arias have chart success.
Having just finished draft one of my first novel I have now got to start the process of beta reading, querying and attempting to find a publisher.

What would you say to those wanting to become an author?

Just keep persevering. It took over a thousand e mails to receive an offer to stage my first musical, so don’t give up.

Tell us about your book/books:

A Dangerous Fossil tells the story of ‘Jurassic’ Jemma Thorne, a university lecturer and fossil hunter.  Jemma and her dog Dino find a massive plesiosaur on the beach in Lulcombe, a fictitious Dorset seaside town. She thinks it will revitalise the local museum where she is a trustee but she doesn’t know it will lead to a trail of jealousy, theft and murder and put her family and friends in danger.

What do you love about the writing/reading community?

I love the feeling of sharing and support. There are always members who will answer questions, make recommendations, give advice or help out with beta reading. It is lovely to congratulate somebody on reaching a milestone with their WIP, finishing a draft or getting a publishing deal.

If you could say anything to your readers what would it be?

Simply that I hope you enjoy my book and feel as excited reading it as I did writing it.
